Architect. Strategic adviser. Community advocate.
I'm interested in how communities, organisations and design teams make better decisions about place, and how those decisions shape everything that follows.
I believe the best places are created long before the first brick is laid. For nearly twenty years I've worked at the intersection of architecture, participation and public life, helping communities, organisations and public bodies navigate complex challenges with clarity, curiosity and confidence.
My work spans strategy, engagement, architecture and organisational leadership. Sometimes that leads to a building. Often it leads to something less visible but just as important: shared understanding, stronger partnerships and better decisions.
Throughout my career I've founded practices, built collaborative teams, advised national organisations, taught, written and campaigned for a more inclusive approach to designing places. I care deeply about how people shape their own neighbourhoods and how design can create lasting social, environmental and cultural value.
Today I am Director of Place at New Practice, part of Civic, where I continue to work across Scotland and the UK on projects that combine community engagement, strategic thinking and design. Alongside practice, I contribute through teaching, public speaking, governance and voluntary roles, sharing ideas about the future of architecture and place.
Whether working with a local community, a national charity, a local authority or a multidisciplinary design team, I'm interested in the same question: How do we create the conditions for better places to emerge? This website brings together my projects, writing, talks and ongoing thinking, a personal record of the ideas, collaborations and experiences that continue to shape my work.
Since 2011, I have co-founded and grown multiple successful sustainable enterprises in architecture, creative practice, and placemaking. These ventures support global networks of artists, collaborators, and creative practitioners, fostering positive change.
Architecture // becca@new-practice.co.ukCreative Hub // becca@manystudios.co.ukI am an award-winning architect specialising in retrofit and meanwhile projects, with a focus on community-led development and urban transformation.
As a Director of Place I balance client, community, and stakeholder needs across public, private, and third sectors, leveraging my experience to create thoughtful, tactical, and tactile outcomes.
To unwind, I explore the world through drawing, painting, and illustration. This passion has filled my home with portfolios, given me de Quervain's tenosynovitis, and an incurable art shop habit, but it's worth it!
